Advanced Placement
Students in the
Academy of Math, Science &
Technology matriculate in AP and post-AP courses, and many receive over a year's
worth of credit at colleges and universities as a result of their success on the
AP exams. Many sophomores take AP Statistics while they are completing their
core courses, and all juniors and seniors take advantage of the full array of AP
course offerings. The prerequisites for the Advanced Scientific Research and
Internship courses are two AP math/science courses. Below is the general
description of the AP Program, provided by College Board, followed by links to
course descriptions and the 2007 AP Scholar Award recipients.
The Advanced Placement ProgramĀ®
is a cooperative educational endeavor between secondary schools and colleges and
universities. Since its inception in 1955, the Program has provided motivated
high school students with the opportunity to take college-level courses in a
high school setting. Students who participate in the Program not only gain
college-level skills, but in many cases they also earn college credit while they
are still in high school. AP courses are taught by dedicated and enthusiastic
high school teachers who follow course guidelines developed and published by the
College Board. Research indicates that academic intensity of a student's high school curriculum remains the most important pre-collegiate predictor of bachelor degree completion. The Advanced Placement ProgramĀ® provides specific rewards for students:
